4 Top Tips on Decluttering Before Your Roof Skylight Arrives
02 Feb
We’re a month into the new year now and for many, it’s a time for refresh and change. The resolution of decluttering and sorting out the living space is quite often high on the list, but it can be a lengthy process.
Now many of us are spending more time at home, it’s the perfect opportunity to get organised, especially if your roof skylight is on its way to brighten up the winter months! Whether you’ve decided to invest in a lantern or not, here at Aliwood, we thought we’d share our top tips on how to declutter the home.
Start Small
In order to achieve your goal, it’s important to break the task ahead into sections. Bitesize chunks, room by room is the way to go! Often, when you’re faced with the mammoth task of a home clear out, it can be overwhelming and discouraging because of the realisation of how much there is to do.
Start by seeing how much you can sort in half an hour, take a break, then come back to it and repeat the process. You’ll be surprised at what you can achieve! Think of this process as an investment to your quality of your life. There’s no major rush, and it can be a work in progress.

Rid the Rubbish
In each room you begin organise, start by throwing away the obvious rubbish. Get as much of it out of the way before you start dealing with the items you use. It’s amazing what you’ll find; old magazines, letters and packaging can all be recycled. Look for any bits and bobs that might be broken. The aim here is to lesser the volume of things to sort through.
The physical space that excess rubbish takes up may hinder your ability to make good decisions about the rest of your goal. Think about how beautiful and spacious the room will look with your roof skylight. Fill up those bin bags to positively impact the end result!

Start Selling
Whilst you’re making some room for your roof skylight, it’s more than likely, you’ll discover some items you forgot you had. Maybe you just don’t use them or need them anymore. If they’re in good condition, think about selling them. Sites like eBay regularly offer no fee periods, so you can profit that little bit more. Selling on social media sites and apps like Depop are quick and easy to use too! Making a sale from something you didn’t even know you had will be extremely satisfying and you can save a few extra pennies to treat yourself to something new!

Get Thrifty
Numerous lockdowns plus Christmas means that we may have accumulated a little more than we actually need. Donations are a fantastic way to clear out things that we may find hard to get rid of. When things still have life left in them, it’s tempting to keep them ‘just in case’. Giving to a charity shop ensure these items will have a second lease of life.
If you have children, you’ll know all too well how the new toys quickly become the favourites, and the old toys end up bursting out of cupboards and all over floor space. Be it toys, books, arts and crafts equipment, it can be donated.
Similarly, with clothes, we all love to treat ourselves to a new winter wardrobe; even though there are brand new things we still haven’t worn from this time last year folded in a drawer. If you’re struggling for space, now is the perfect time to clear out the old to make way for the new. Anything in good condition will be greatly received by your local charity shop or clothes bank. If you’re not sure about what to donate, give them a ring and check to see what they need most.
