What is a Square Roof Lantern?

Square roof lanterns are the smallest size of roof lantern available to fit onto a flat roof. They’re neat, contemporary and completely symmetrical with clean-cut lines. They are perfect for use in smaller or square shaped rooms, bringing with them lots of light and spaciousness.

Traditionally, square roof lanterns reach their full potential in bathrooms, home offices, staircases, nurseries, gyms and small dining rooms. That being said, they can also be used to draw attention to specific areas in a larger open-plan room, for example, by sitting above a kitchen island where food might be prepared, or over a comfortable reading nook.

Sizing and Pricing

Our square roof lanterns are modern and perfect for homeowners looking for something a little smaller than the common rectangular shape. Quaint in nature, our roof lanterns contribute to the aesthetic of the room without dominating and draw natural light down into a singular zone of the room below, such as a seating or dining space. Aliwood square roof lanterns come in three measurements, the smallest between 900mm2 – 1.2m2, costs £995. The medium size is 2 square metres, costing approximately £2100 and the largest measures around 3m2, costing £3200.

Materials and Thermal Qualities

We’re passionate about the environment at Aliwood, and sustainability is in our nature. We continuously make an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and minimise the impact on our planet. We use a premium grade, knot-free laminated redwood timber, in our roof lanterns, which is selected for its durability and stability. Our timber is sourced from fast-growing, FSC® certified forests and is a sustainable alternative to both tropical hardwoods and PVC.

The thermal qualities of the timber aid heat retention in the colder months. Externally, it is fully capped with powder-coated aluminium, meaning that no timber elements are exposed to weathering, ensuring no water ingress or leakages. Our glass makeup is 4-16-4mm, high insulating, toughened glass units with soft low-E coating. The unique design of our roof lanterns, together with our installation technique, improves the thermal performance through the timber components. This enables us to offer a luxury, energy-saving product.

Additionally, an added benefit of a timber roof lantern is that there are no cold spots to draw condensation. PVC and aluminium skylights struggle to stop cold bridging. This is also known as a thermal break and they occur when there is a break in the continuity of the insulation. In our products, thermal breaks include a rubber gasket, which separates the conductive aluminium components to provide superb thermal insulation.

Benefits

Square roof lanterns not only look beautiful, but they bring with them a whole host on benefits. We thought we’d outline a few for you!

Cost-Effective

Alongside the savings on your heating bill, having a roof light installed is a substantially cheaper alternative to having an extension rebuilt. It can give any room the lift it needs, flooding it with daylight when necessary, meaning you also use less electricity, instilling long-term financial benefits.

Light

Of course, roof lanterns are most commonly known for the light and space they bring to a room. Square roof lanterns help to open up a smaller room, filling it with natural brightness from above. Not only does this make the room appear larger, it creates a fresh and ambient space, perfect to soak up the autumnal sun over a pumpkin spiced latte.

Value

Whether you’re thinking of selling now or further down the line, a roof lantern will always add value to your home. Square roof lanterns not only look grand, but they are energy efficient, benefitting you as the current homeowner, and as a selling point further down the line. A more efficient home is a more valuable home, with recent figures showing up to a 28% value increase in properties securing a higher energy rating.
