Double-glazing is the standard default these days; windows are rarely sold without it.
It has gained popularity over the past few decades and boasts better qualities than single insulation. Here at Aliwood, all of our contemporary roof lanterns are double glazed. Saving money and ensuring your house is correctly insulated are just a few of the benefits of having double glazing. Add that to a roof lantern and you have a stunning addition to your house that can help you become energy efficient.
Let us take a closer look at how contemporary roof lanterns with double glazing can improve your home and just how double-glazing works.

What is double glazing?
You have probably heard of double glazing, but are you aware of what it means? Double glazing is when a window, instead of consisting of one pane of glass, consists of two. The two layers are separated by argon gas. The argon gas in between the two panes of glass has 67% thermal conductivity of air. This means is doesn’t conduct heat and the warmth gets trapped inside your house instead. Not only does the second pane keep in heat, it can also act as an extra barrier for outside noise and improves security by strengthening the window.
Benefits of double glazed roof lanterns
Contemporary roof lanterns that have double glazing have plenty of great benefits, as we previously touched on in the last section. We’re going to go into a bit more detail on those.
Warmth
The argon gas prevents the heat escaping and means that whichever room you choose to install your roof lantern, you are going to prevent any heat escaping it. This will also extend to your whole house.
Saving money
Compared to roof lanterns that have only a single pane of glass, contemporary roof lanterns installed with double glazing can save you up to £400 a year on your utility and energy bills. The reason you can save this much is down to the heat retention. Due to the insulating properties of your double-glazed roof lantern, you will not need to heat your home as much or have the heating up too high. A roof lantern is definitely an investment; it may cost you a little extra to install initially, but it will pay off down the line.
Noise reduction
Glass is already a good material for reducing noise. Installing one of our contemporary roof lanterns that have double glazing will only increase the reduction of noise from outside. This is due to the thickness of the glass and the layer in between them.
Low E coating
Our contemporary roof lanterns are also equipped with a soft Low E coating. Low E stands for Low emissivity glass and is a type of energy efficient glass glazing with a very thin coating. This coating has been designed to filter infrared and ultraviolet light. Along with the double glazing, this contributes to the prevention of heat loss. It also works to protect your furniture and the inside of your home from the suns’ damaging UV rays, reducing the risk of things like fabric fading. Having both double glazing and the Low E coating on our contemporary roof lanterns makes them incredibly energy efficient.
Aliwood Glass
The glass we use in our products is not only double glazed and covered with a Low-E coating, but it is also 4/16/4mm toughened glass. This heightens the insulting properties. Our glass is standard toughened glass which provides optimum security and sound insulation. We also offer the option to upgrade to incorporate an 4/14/6.4mm laminated pane. This extra lamination will successfully reduce the UV rays coming into your home.

Timber and aluminium frame
We use a premium grade Redwood timber which we source from FSC certified forests. This is a sustainable alternative to using tropical hardwoods or PVC. Our timber also has heat retention properties that will work alongside the glass elements of the roof lanterns in the colder months.
Unlike other roof lanterns, our contemporary roof lanterns are crafted with a powder-coated aluminium frame so none of the timber frame is exposed. This guarantees no cold spots that can draw condensation which is very important in rooms with high humidity such as kitchens and bathrooms. Cold weak spots are known as cold bridges and to minimise the heat loss in our products, Aliwood use thermal breaks. Thermal breaks are pieces of material that are put into the frame to reduce the heat loss. Our products have rubber gaskets to separate the conductive aluminium components.
