Does A Roof Lantern Let in More Light?

Bright living room with large windows, skylights, a beige sectional sofa, glass coffee table, and view of a pool and garden.

The simple answer to this question is ‘of course it does!’

But this answer alone might not be enough to reassure you when you are looking to invest in a roof lantern. With the summer solstice just around the corner, there has never been a better time to look at ways to maximise the light in your home.

Here at Aliwood, we have over 30 years of experience to assist you in choosing the perfect roof lantern. We can also provide expertise to help you understand how this addition will let in more light into your space.

Natural Light

It is no secret that natural light can benefit us in an abundance of ways, so why not add more of it to your home! A roof lantern lets in three times more light than a conventional window does, boosting the flow of natural light throughout your home.

Due to its angled panels, a roof lantern reigns supreme over a skylight when it comes to letting in the sunshine. It allows the light to stream directly into your house, reaching the spots that may have been previously untouched. A roof lantern can flood a dull and dark room with daylight, turning it into a sunshine haven. The added height will also make the room appear more spacious.

Glass

Everyone knows that glass lets light through, it is just common sense, but some glass is better at doing it than others. The glass used within a roof lantern makes a big difference to how much extra light you are getting.

At Aliwood, our products always include glass that is pure in colour with a low E coating, meaning you will always benefit from maximum light flow into your home. Glass with a low E coating will protect your precious furnishings from any sun fading and reduce the bleaching effect sun can have on carpets. It is also a great way to protect you and your family from harmful UV rays that could enter your home. It will also decrease the glare you get from regular glass; you can enjoy the light in any room of your house, without squinting.

Some roof lanterns that have a full low E coating can actually reduce the amount of natural light you get in your home, however, our Aliwood products only have a soft coating. This means the diffusion of light is still more than what you would see from a regular window but cuts down the harmful UV rays.

Different Rooms

When installing your roof lantern, it is important to think about the areas of your home that will benefit the most from natural light. People have found that by installing a roof lantern in a home office space, they significantly increase their exposure to sunlight. This promotes productivity and reduces the reliance on unnatural light, such as desk lamps.

A roof lantern also enhances kitchens, especially when fitted with a vent. Vents can help to filter out steam when you are cooking.

Another room that may benefit from extra natural light is a bathroom. Bathrooms do not tend to have conventional vertical windows for obvious reasons, and this can sometime mean having to sacrifice aesthetics to fit a smaller, frosted window. With a roof lantern, the natural light will flow in from above, creating optimum space, and you won’t have to worry about any possible embarrassments.

Other Benefits

As well as promoting that all important extra flow of light and spaciousness, a roof lantern has many other advantages. The glass we use in our Aliwood products is designed to keep your home insulated, no matter the weather.

You can rest easy knowing you won’t be losing any heat during those colder months, and you will be able to save money on your heating bills. You can also save money on your electricity bills due to the natural light you will be letting into your home. This is going to reduce the need for you to rely on artificial light.

Our roof lanterns also serve as a wonderful aesthetic feature of your home, setting your abode apart from others and making your space unique.
