Earth Day Focus: Eco Friendly Roof Lanterns

With Earth Day on 22nd April, our planet is at the forefront of our minds.

In light of this, we thought we’d take a closer look at our roof lanterns, how they’re eco-friendly and why they can make a difference to both your home, energy bills and the environment.

Aliwood’s Eco-Friendly Materials

Making conscious decisions to benefit our planet will only have a positive effect on our globe. We live in a world where global warming is a huge cause for concern. Aliwood Timber

All of our products are made from low carbon materials. Our premium grade knot-free, laminated Redwood, timber results in less production on replacement materials. This is because it is renowned for its long-lasting durability. The timber used for our roof lanterns is obtained from FSC certified forests. Aliwood does not use unsustainable woods like hardwood and follows the highest environmental standards. Our eco-friendly timber works to keep in the heat during the winter months, whilst makes it cooler in the summer, helping to cut down on energy bills for individual households. This enables you to maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Paint

The paint used for our roof lanterns is spray apply Teknos paint. There are significantly low levels of VOC (volatile organic compounds) in Teknos paint when compared to other brands of paint. In fact, the paint used on our timber roof lanterns, is noticeably lower in relation to present legislative levels.

Toxins from paints used by other companies, disperses freely into the atmosphere. This is why we have made the conscious decision to use an eco-friendly paint and no metal additives, maintaining our green philosophy.

Glass

Our timber roof lanterns are an energy saving product, with each material used with the environment in mind. Our glass roof lanterns are designed to be suitable and cost-effective all year round. Our glass makeup is 4-16-4mm, high insulating, toughened glass with soft low-E coating. The unique design of our roof lanterns, together with our installation technique, improves the thermal performance through the timber components. This enables us to offer an energy-saving product. 

We also use thermal breaks in our builds, as they have low thermal conductivity, which prevents thermal energy from passing through. Our thermal breaks are made from resin, silicone, and Styrofoam. This puts an air cap in-between the components, which provides an insulating layer of air, providing you with consistent temperatures in your home.

In fact, product transport is responsible for roughly one-fifth of global carbon dioxide emissions, with much research to indicate that this statistic will continue to rise. Transportation of materials are often overlooked when looking at the factors contributing to global warming.

We understand the importance of lowering the transport emissions of our roof lanterns. At Aliwood, we source materials from local suppliers and Europe, rather than America and further afield. This lowers our carbon footprint and enhances material efficacy.

We are passionate about being an eco-friendly company. We want to not only minimise risks of future damage but improve the environment that we inhabit today. We believe in self-sufficiency and use any leftover materials as fuel for our onsite boiler, generating our heat.
