Glass Roof Lanterns: Curbing the Increase in Energy Bills

Tall power lines and towers stretch into the distance at sunset, with a colorful sky and a few clouds overhead.

As of last month, millions of households in Great Britain faced higher bills for gas and electricity, after a 12% increase in the cap on prices that energy providers can charge for variable rate tariffs.

Although this has happened before, we haven’t experienced one so steep in a while and for many, the effects could be detrimental.

A glass roof lantern is not only better for the environment, but it could save you a lot of money in energy bills, should you choose to purchase one. In this blog, Aliwood are going to discuss the benefits of a glass roof lantern and how they help to curb the increase in energy bills.

Energy Inflation

Back in the summer, Ofgem announced that the energy cap would go up after a sharp rise in wholesale gas prices. Providers are allowed to charge less, but customers on fixed-price contracts are the ones who have been hit the hardest with the increase.

The gas and electricity unit price limit varies in different UK locations and is also different based on how customers pay their bills. For the average dual fuel customer paying by direct debit, bills of around £1280 are expected; £140 more than under the old cap. With many sources stating the lack of good deals available at the moment, the advice is to stick with your current energy supplier.

Although we can’t control the rise in energy bills, a roof lantern can certainly make the situation a little better.

Thermal Benefits of Glass Roof Lanterns

Our glass roof lanterns are designed to be suitable and cost-effective all year round. In essence, they help to keep your room cooler in the summer and retain the warmth during the winter, preventing any heat from escaping quickly. At Aliwood, our glass makeup is 4-16-4mm, high insulating, toughened glass with soft low-E coating. The unique design of our roof lanterns, together with our installation technique, improves the thermal performance through the timber components. This enables us to offer an energy-saving product.

We use thermal breaks in our builds, as they have low thermal conductivity, which prevents thermal energy from passing through. Our thermal breaks are made from resin, silicone, and Styrofoam. This puts an air cap in-between the components, which provides an insulating layer of air, providing you with consistent temperatures in your home.

Sustainable Materials

We use a premium grade, knot-free laminated redwood timber, selected for its durability and stability. Our timber is sourced from fast-growing, FSC® certified forests and is a sustainable alternative to both tropical hardwoods and PVC. Thermal qualities of the timber aid heat retention in the colder months and continue to cut the costs of energy bills. Externally, it is fully capped with marine-grade, powder-coated aluminium, meaning that no timber elements are exposed to weathering, ensuring no water ingress or leakages.

The benefit of a glass roof lantern made with timber is that there are no cold spots to draw condensation. PVC and aluminium skylights struggle to stop cold bridging. This is also known as a thermal break and they occur when there is a break in the continuity of the insulation.

Saving You Money

A glass roof lantern will save you money on your heating and electric bill, instilling long-term financial benefits. A roof lantern means that your home quickly becomes more energy efficient. Not only does this help the environment but it’s a cost-effective way of life, reducing your energy bills. This sustainable addition to your home means you’ll save your pocket, without any extra hassle. A roof lantern removes the need for artificial light, cutting your energy usage dramatically. Due to the unfailing heat retention previously mentioned, you won’t be losing any of the warmth, contributing to your home becoming much more energy efficient!

In these colder months, you can relax knowing that our glass roof lanterns will be saving you money, without you even having to give it a second thought.
