How Our Roof Lanterns Promote Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
20 Nov
Put simply, energy efficiency means using less energy to perform routine tasks in order to eliminate energy waste. With it, energy efficiency brings a variety of benefits such as, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, diminishing demand for energy imports, and lowering our costs on a household and economy-wide level.
Here at Aliwood, we wanted to give you an insight into our Essex skylights and how they can promote energy efficiency within your home and benefit the sustainability of our environment.
Thermal Benefits
Our bespoke roof lanterns are designed to be suitable all year round. Essentially, they help to keep your room cooler in the summer and retain the warmth during the winter months, preventing any heat from escaping quickly. Our glass makeup is 4-16-4mm, high insulating, toughened glass units with soft low-E coating. The unique design of our roof lanterns, together with our installation technique, improves the thermal performance through the timber components. This enables us to offer a luxury, energy-saving product.
Additionally, we also offer sun guard solar reflective glass which helps to minimise solar glare and heat build-up in warmer months. Our varying range can incorporate single or double opening vents which draws warm air, up and out. The vents can function electronically, either with the touch of a button or with a thermostatic rain sensor that operates automatically, opening when the room warms up and closing as it cools or when rain is detected.

Talking Timber
We use a premium grade, knot-free laminated redwood timber, selected for its durability and stability. Our timber is sourced from fast-growing, FSC® certified forests and is a sustainable alternative to both tropical hardwoods and PVC. Thermal qualities of the timber aid heat retention in colder months. Externally, it is fully capped with powder-coated aluminium, meaning that no timber elements are exposed to weathering, ensuring no water ingress or leakages.
The benefit of a timber roof lantern is that there are no cold spots to draw condensation. PVC and aluminium skylights struggle to stop cold bridging. This is also known as a thermal break and they occur when there is a break in the continuity of the insulation. In our products, thermal breaks include a rubber gasket, which separates the conductive aluminium components to provide superb thermal insulation.

Cost-Effective Sustainability
Alongside the savings on your heating bill, having a roof light installed is a substantially cheaper alternative to having an extension rebuilt. It can give any room the lift it needs, flooding it with daylight when necessary, meaning you also use less electricity, instilling long-term financial benefits.
Talking of saving, we also believe in the sustainability of our planet. Sustainability is at the forefront of our company ethos. We continuously strive to lower our carbon footprint and therefore, minimise our impact on the environment. We deliver sustainable products manufactured using environmentally friendly, renewable resources and recyclable materials. We have worked hard to increase the energy efficiency of our products, which are themselves environmentally friendly, based on their quality and longevity. We do everything we can to ensure that we are doing our bit, not only to minimise our impact on the planet but to actually improve the environment in which we all live. We aim for self-sufficiency wherever possible, such as using all leftover offcuts and materials to feed into our onsite biomass boiler which generates our heating.
