Working from home is back on the agenda for many companies.
Maybe you’ve been working from home since March 2020 and are looking for an office refresh? Perhaps you’ve started a brand-new job and are looking to kit out your new home office after never working from home before?
Aliwood roof lanterns wanted to take a look at some of the home office essentials for 2022, to ensure you feel productive, whilst making the most of that work-life balance.
Planning
Before jumping straight to your computer and desk, you should plan your set up. Think carefully about what would help you to be more productive when working from home. What are your essentials? It could be an open window, a comfy seat, fresh water at the ready. Ensure that you have what you need close by.
It’s worth thinking about how easy it is to store these things away too. Where possible, you don’t want to be eating where you’re working and working where you’re sleeping! Separate your space if you can, even if it’s simply shutting your work notepad away at the end of each day. It helps to promote an equal work-life balance.
Roof Lanterns
If you want to make the most of your home office, investing in a roof lantern is a fantastic idea. Now, it might seem like a way to go for a home office but with so much more time being spent at home, why not make it as enjoyable as possible? The environment you work in plays a huge part when it comes to productivity and general comfort throughout the working day.
Wherever you decide to house your roof lantern, it’ll allow natural light to flood your chosen room. It’ll create a bright and airy space, perfect for your home office, lounge room, kitchen or conservatory to name a few. The health benefits of natural light are countless, promoting better mental health and increased productivity at work. Show your employers what you’re made of in 2022!

A Laptop
As with most of you work set up, your employer should allow you to take your computer home with you to enable you to the fundamentals. However, if you can use another computer, a laptop can provide ultimate flexibility. Should things ever get too much at home, you can take your laptop out to a local coffee shop for a change of scenery. Laptops allow you to change your working position, making any remote working location accessible.
A Desk and Stand
A home desk with enough space to work at is an essential that you will use each day when working from home. Somewhere to store all of your work things and have as a work ‘station’ means it’s easy to distinguish between your place of work and place of leisure – ie: the dining room table. Ensure your desk is high enough for you and has a space big enough to fit you and your chair underneath. If you’re a strapped for room, take a look at the fold down desks, that are perfect for flats or tight spaces.
When on a desk, the top part of your computer or laptop screen should be in line with your eye level, so ensure that your screen is high enough by investing in a desk stand. They’re portable. So, once you’ve got one, your device will always be at the right height, allowing you to work comfortably, without hunching over or straining upwards.

A Comfortable Chair
Again, if you know you have a comfortable desk chair, your employer will be able to make arrangements to have it sent to you. If you’re looking to invest in a seat to have the option of hybrid working in the future, Aliwood roof lanterns would recommend going for high quality to prevent long term injury.
You’ll spend the majority of your working day in this chair, so look for a comfortable seat, a high back and arm rests, if you feel you need them. You need good lumbar support, adjustable height to ensure your feet rest flat on the floor and a swivel base if possible, to reduce strain.
High Speed Internet
You might be thinking, ‘well, that’s obvious’, but it’s imperative that your internet is high speed and able to cope with the demands of your daily work capacity. Many people who are new to working from home forget about the greater level of speed required to do work tasks, compared to your everyday browsing and shopping online.
Simple things like video calling your colleagues and clients or sending through large documents in different formats mean that you’re going to rely on good, high quality internet to do so. The last thing you want is your video conference dropping mid presentation, or your file download taking hours when it should take minutes.
It’s worth looking at the options your provider can give you and upgrading to a faster package if possible. This will enable you to do your job just as efficiently from home and save you time and a lot of frustration further down the line.

Here are some extra home office essentials that are extremely handy to have:
