We analysed each region in England based upon the following factors: hours of sunshine in each season, annual rainfall, window cleaning prices, and visibility based on astronomy.

All data was sourced (details below) and then averaged. The sunshine rate is determined by seasonal hours and rainfall is measured yearly in millimetres (mm). All data related to weather was gathered from 2020 MET data. The cost of window cleaning was created using data from this website – except for Wales, which was sourced here. Once we had this data, an average was calculated. Visibility was determined by how many registered locations there are in each region, as shown on this site. Once all the data had been collected, we created a ranking to define what areas benefit most from the domestic modification of a roof lantern – awarding 10 points to the best in each category, 9 to the second-best, and so on.
Note that these are averages only and the actual figures may differ.
In the darker, colder months, natural light becomes increasingly hard to come by. The inclusion of a roof lantern – like those developed by Aliwood – within your property can really help to introduce more healthy and sustainable natural light into your home.
Natural light will promote a sense of wellbeing – being an incredible source of Vitamin D – and is found by many to be a natural remedy to a variety of mental health struggles, whilst also encouraging a better night’s sleep. The benefits one can reap from its presence alone is, quite frankly, staggering. For those needing to isolate or spend a great deal of time working from home, or those who regularly suffer from seasonal depression, it’s increasingly important to get as much natural light as you can.
Many people use a lot of fluorescent lighting in their homes, but this has been found to have certain health risks, such as migraines and eye strain – especially when being used as a leading source of light throughout the day. Fluorescent lighting also elicits an elevated stress response in many – something that natural light helps to mitigate.
Further to all the above, being able to effectively light your home by natural means will, naturally, lower your lighting costs significantly.
