You’re thinking of getting a roof lantern, but you have a flat roof. What do you do?
You’re looking for a roof lantern for your flat roof, but which type is right for your home?
We want you to get the best results for your home, so here’s our guide to choosing the right flat roof lantern.
What Shape Should I Go For?
The shape you choose will depend on the dimensions and layout of the room, as well as how it sits within the wider flow of the house. Size matters in both directions, too large and it can feel overwhelming, too small and it won’t make the impact you’re looking for.
We can help you to decide the size that’s right for you, offering three different shapes: square, rectangular and octagonal. Here’s more detail on our sizing to give you an idea for your flat roof:
Square Roof Lanterns
Our square roof lantern has a neat, symmetrical and modern appearance and is best suited for smaller or square-shaped ceilings. It’s also recommended for homeowners who require a smaller roof lantern than the usual rectangular shape. However, for spaces that need ventilation, square roof lanterns cannot accommodate vents.
These roof lanterns draw natural light down into a zone of the room below, such as a seating or dining space. They contribute to the room’s overall aesthetic providing natural light and space.
They come in three measurements, the smallest between 900mm² – 1.2m², costing £1,250. The medium size is 2 square metres, costing approximately £2,100 and the largest measures around 3m², costing £3,200.
Rectangular Roof Lanterns
The rectangular roof lantern is most commonly used to enhance longer and larger rooms. Typically, they run the length of a room, impacting the space and transforming it into a bright and inviting area of the home.
Our rectangular lanterns do not include vents, but they can be added for a small additional cost.
The smallest rectangular roof lantern at 1.5m x 2m, costs £2,300. A medium-sized rectangular roof lantern at 2m x 4m is around £3,300. The largest of the sizing measures 3m x 5.6m and will cost approximately £4,500.
Octagonal Roof Lanterns
Lastly, our octagonal roof lantern brings a sense of scale and depth to your home. From the inside, it gives the impression of a dome structure, allowing light to enter the room from all angles.
Octagonal roof lanterns are ideal for circular or polygonal rooms, often found in period homes and heritage homes. Please contact us directly to discuss requirements for your octagonal lantern.

What Room Should I Install My Flat Roof Lantern?
Your roof lantern can only fit on top of a flat roof, so the location of installation depends on the individual house.
Traditionally, a roof lantern is placed above the living room, dining or kitchen area. However, roof lanterns work in a variety of different rooms, and wherever you decide to install it will be tailored to your home’s needs.
Can I Install a Roof Lantern on a Pitched Roof?
Roof lanterns are designed for flat roofs. Any kind of angled pitching would mean that the glass, timber and aluminium structure may not be sufficiently supported

How Do I Install a Flat Roof Lantern?
For ease and convenience, we offer two methods when it comes to installation:
The first is ‘Supply and Install’; this is where we offer our specialist and comprehensive service to not only supply, but install your product too. Prices for this service usually start at around £800 and will be included in your quotation, but will differ depending on location. This option ensures a straightforward, professionally managed installation.
Secondly, we offer a ‘Supply Only’ service. This means that we supply your roof lantern but don’t install it. The lantern will be delivered in its construct component parts, accompanied by a detailed installation manual – along with our set up video – to ensure the process goes smoothly.
Depending on the size chosen, you may need to dedicate more time to installing the roof lantern. It’s important to note that for some parts of the construction, you will need more than one person for completion.
