The team here at Aliwood, designers of bespoke roof lanterns, wanted to talk about the different benefits that each room in a home provides when it comes to placing your roof light.
So, you’ve decided that you want to invest in a timber roof lantern – perfect! Now comes the tricky part, where on earth do you put it in your house? For some people, there’s only one space they could possibly conceive placing it. For others, however, the decision doesn’t come as easily.
The Kitchen
This is a room often quoted as being the heart of a home. Whilst each home of course varies, we can’t help but feel inclined to agree. Few other rooms in the home receive the levels of ‘traffic’ every day that a kitchen does – both socially and out of necessity. As such, you want that regularly frequented space to be somewhere you want to be. The light, bright space that a custom roof lantern helps to create is ideal for such a sociable environment. It can be that final something that turns the kitchen into the family unit’s perfect space.

The Lounge/Living Room
Lounges come a close second to kitchens in terms of their importance within a domestic environment. We’d most recommend the living room as the space to choose if you’re the kind of family that loves the feeling of cosiness. Living in Britain, we get a wide range of weather conditions and, much though we’d like this to be the case, it’s not sunny all the time. There’s nothing more satisfying than hunkering down when the weather’s really raging outside. It taps into our primal human need for shelter, and this feeling is only amplified when you can see what’s happening. This, when paired with the satisfying sound of rain droplets pounding on the glass panes, is part of what makes the ‘snug’ such a great room for a timber roof lantern.

The Bathroom
Bathrooms make great places for custom roof lanterns for two reasons. Firstly, the mornings. When the sun is just rising and you traipse your way, bleary-eyed, to the bathroom, what you want is some natural light to help wake you up and get you going for the day. This additional light will also help put you in a more positive mood for the rest of the day, the importance of which cannot be overstated – and I say that as someone who’s a real grump in the mornings! The second reason is for the end of the day. When the sun’s gone down and you’re getting ready for bed, seeing the starry night sky provides a lovely way to mark another day done. A less obvious benefit of a roof lantern in the window is the increased privacy; often, bathroom window panes have to be frosted to grant some privacy. But with our product, nobody is going to be looking in from above (we hope!).

The Office
In recent times, especially, remote working has become increasingly popular. It’s long been reported that the level of natural light to which you’re exposed is linked correspondingly to levels of productivity. In short, the lighter your office space, the more work you’re going to get done. A lighter environment also helps prevent you from becoming overly demoralised by work. Of course, everybody has days at work where they’re not overly enthused, but when you’re mixing your home space and work space into one, it’s especially vital that you keep ‘work’ a more positive space.

Hopefully, this will have shed some light on which room you want your roof lantern in. Whichever room you end up choosing, you can be sure that it’s going to be improved by the installation of one of our timber roof lanterns.
