What Will A Flat Roof Skylight Bring To My Home In The Winter Months?
28 Dec
Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year and here at Aliwood, we believe that having a bespoke roof lantern only enhances its beauty. Relish the crystallised frost on the leaves, the starry night sky and of course, the snow falling outside, whilst your inside with a cup of hot cocoa!
One of the questions we are often asked is, ‘does a skylight make the room cold in winter?’ The answer is no! In fact, installing one of our lanterns is actually a sustainable and cost-effective investment to your property.
Cosy and Bright
In winter, the need for general light is much more. With the evenings drawing in earlier, we tend to use more electricity in the winter months. A roof lantern always allows natural light to cascade into a room, so when during the day, you may not need excess lights switched on to provide the bright setting desired.
However, the mornings are slightly lighter now the clocks have changed, so you can enjoy a scenic cup of coffee as the winter sun shines through, all under the comfort of your glass roof lantern.

Winter Warmers
There is a common misconception that flat roof skylights do not have thermal properties and allow heat to escape. In fact, it’s quite the opposite! They’re completely weatherproof and the thermal insulation and glazing helps the room to retain heat extremely well.
Internally, our products are crafted from premium quality, knot-free laminated Redwood timber, and is fully capped with powder-coated aluminium externally. This means that no timber elements are exposed to weathering, ensuring no water ingress or leakages. Our aluminium capping provides exceptional durability and protection against weather conditions.
The benefit of a timber roof lantern is that there are no cold spots to draw condensation. Some PVC and aluminium lanterns struggle to stop cold bridging – a cold bridge is a weak spot in the insulation surrounding the roof lantern. Additionally, cold bridges (also known as thermal breaks) occur when there is a break in the continuity of the insulation. In our products, these thermal breaks include a rubber gasket, which separates the conductive aluminium components to provide superb thermal insulation.
So, you can rest assured that your skylight will keep things warm, cosy and scenic this winter.

Snowy Scenes
There’s something about being wrapped up by the fire whilst the weather outside is crisp and cold. Turning your orangery roof lantern into a little sanctuary to unwind is the perfect idea. Escape to a little slice of luxury and indulge in some furry throws and cushions, some fragrant candles and your favourite winter tipple to warm you up. Imagine being able to watch the snow fall from your personal grotto. Sounds perfect!
In order to enjoy these scenes to their full potential, we recommend keeping your skylight well maintained. Just a simple wipe over or quick check of the fixtures before any harsh weather can give you ultimate peace of mind during the winter months.
