These are Aliwood's top reasons you should choose a timber roof lantern as opposed to other options when upgrading your home!

In recent years, the rise in the popularity of roof lanterns could be used interchangeably with the rise in popularity of aluminium or UPVC roof lanterns. This isn’t surprising, both of these materials make for great roof lanterns, as they’re durable, versatile and easy to work with. There’s another material, however, that Aliwood offers for the construction of roof lanterns. We are of course talking about timber roof lanterns.

Timber has seen a resurgence in many areas of design over the past few years. People are increasingly wanting to utilise more natural, organic materials once again. The benefits of using timber are manifold. The team here at Aliwood want to talk about some of these benefits, and why you should be considering installing a timber roof lantern over a UPVC or full aluminium one. Aliwood roof lanterns are crafted from a combination of timber and aluminium, meaning they benefit from the aesthetic of a timber roof lantern but are fully capped with aluminium externally, ensuring that no timber elements are exposed to weathering.

Aesthetically Gorgeous

First and foremost, roof lanterns are aesthetic pieces. You have them installed in your home because they look fantastic. They add light, they draw people’s eyes and they add elegance and style to your home. If you add timber into the equation, you’re onto even more of a winner. Painted timber roof lanterns look far more aesthetically-pleasing than the PVC equivalents. They look less incongruous, especially in a rural setting, and blend in better to your existing space. The timber is coated with a specialist Teknos paint; its low levels of volatile organic compounds make it much kinder for the environment, and it also comes in a range of muted colours.

Increased Energy Efficiency

Although wood may seem like a relatively traditional material, timber roof lanterns are actually much more thermally efficient than PVC and aluminium roof lanterns. The reasoning behind this is that timber roof lanterns have no cold spots. This means that there’s nowhere where condensation can be drawn, and cold bridging is stopped as a result. Cold bridges are weak spots in the insulation surrounding the roof lantern, the part which adjoins the lantern to the surrounding part of the building (hence bridge). The thermal gaskets attached provide superb thermal insulation.

Sustainability

An integral part of the Aliwood ethos is sustainability. This is vital given the global climate crisis, Aliwood’s timber roof lanterns utilise timber (knot-free redwood) sourced from fast-growing, FSC certified forests, and is a more sustainable alternative to PVC and tropical hardwoods. Aiming to reduce carbon emissions where possible is also crucial for Aliwood. Leftover offcuts from the manufacturing process are fed into an onsite biomass boiler used to generate the premise’s heating.

The trend to use timber materials shows no signs of slowing down, and so long as the material remains sustainably sourced, should continue to be utilised. Timber roof lanterns aren’t just an alternative, they should be your first choice of roof lantern. Their look, paired with sustainable processes and increased energy efficiencies, make them the obvious option.
