With the summer fast approaching, you may be considering adding a roof lantern to your home, to allow more sunlight in during the longer days.
Here at Aliwood, we provide high quality products made from sustainable materials that are designed to let you make the most of all the seasons.
One of the biggest concerns people have when looking to invest in a roof lantern is about the transfer of heat and how it will affect their room and their home in the long run. This is a justified concern, but rest assured, we’re experts and our products are designed to retain heat! Let’s take a closer look at how roof lanterns can improve temperature control in your home.
Glass
Aliwood roof lanterns are crafted from the very best materials to ensure your home is properly insulated during the colder months but doesn’t retain too much heat during the summer. Not only is the glass on our bespoke roof lanterns high insulating 4/16/4mm toughened glass, it also has a Sun Guard solar reflective coating that reduces the solar glare and prevents the heat buildup within your home during hotter weather conditions. This extra touch, along with the soft Low-E coating, keeps your room cooler during those summer months whilst guaranteeing no heat loss in the longer, chilly winter months.
Ventilation
Our range of roof lanterns can be installed with an optional double or single vent for an extra cost. This ventilation will help to draw warm air up and out of a room, expelling the heat and cooling a room. The vents are particularly helpful if you are installing a roof lantern in a room that receives a lot of direct sunlight, or in a kitchen where the room is naturally hotter due to heat and steam. Ventilation is managed electronically with the touch of a button or with a thermostatic rain sensor. The sensor operates automatically and can detect rainfall, opening when the room gets too warm and closing when it detects rainfall.

Timber
At Aliwood, we are particularly proud of the wood we use in our products. Our wood frame is made from a premium grade, knot-free laminated Redwood timber that is sustainably sourced from environmentally friendly forests. We use this particular wood for our products not only because of its sustainability, durability and stability, but also because of the thermal qualities of the timber. Redwood timber aids with heat retention during colder months meaning your roof lantern is designed for stability all year round, whatever the weather. In addition to our timber framing, finials are made from a timber-resin composite material that will ensure longevity, as opposed to a solid timber finial, which have been known to split over the course of time.
Thermal Break
Unlike traditional roof lanterns, ours are crafted with a marine-grade, powder-coated aluminum frame so no timber is exposed. Additionally, they also stop cold bridging, something ordinary PVC or just aluminum lanterns struggle to do. The timber frame, along with this aluminum covering, guarantees there are no cold spots in your roof lantern that will draw condensation or allow warmth to escape from your home during the autumn and winter. This is especially important in rooms with high humidity, such as kitchens or bathrooms, where you would usually find condensation occurring.
Cold weak spots in the insulation surrounding a roof lantern can be known as cold bridges and to minimise this heat loss in our products, Aliwood introduces a thermal break. Thermal breaks are pieces of material that are put within the frame of a roof lantern to reduce the amount of heat lost. Our roof lanterns include a rubber gasket as the thermal break, to separate the conductive aluminum components. These components greatly minimise cold transfer and will provide top-quality insulation for your home, whilst reducing condensation allowing you to retain all the precious heat in your home.

Savings
Not only do all of these components make a roof lantern perfect for any kind of weather and for keeping your home correctly insulated in the summer, but you can relax knowing that our roof lanterns will be saving you money on your heating bills during those cold winter months, without you even having to give it a second thought. Aside from the temperature benefits, a roof lantern will also allow more natural light into your space, in turn reducing your electricity bills.
