In today’s blog, Aliwood wanted to look in a little more detail at how our roof lanterns are built with longevity and durability in mind.
Here at Aliwood, our timber lanterns not only make an amazing feature of the home, but they are an incredibly sturdy way adding natural light into your rooms. When it comes to designing our bespoke timber lanterns, our team considers the function of the lantern just as much as the way they look.

Marine-Grade Aluminium Paint
If you’re a trans-Atlantic fishing vessel, then you’re going to need some serious protection from the elements. Dealing with gale-force storms and crashing waves will take its toll if you don’t properly protect yourself. What these ships and many others use is marine-grade paint coatings – composed specially to protect the ship’s exterior from extreme conditions. In the same way, the outside of Aliwood’s timber lanterns are all coated with a powder coating of this marine-grade aluminium paint. We do this in order to ensure maximum durability, even in the harshest conditions. Plus, it just so happens that the coating looks great as well!

Thermal Timber Qualities
Whilst not the most extreme, by any stretch, here in Britain we can still be subject to some pretty wide-ranging temperatures. In the cooler temperatures of the winter months, the timber used in our roof lanterns, a special kind of redwood timber, helps aid heat retention to keep you and your loved ones nice and toasty whilst a frost whips up outside. Many people assume that to have good energy efficiency in a home, you need the most high-tech, modern solutions. In actual fact, you can rely on time-honoured tradition in the form of materials being used well. Does our timber help keep heat in the home? Yes. Does it look more attractive than the, at least conventionally, more efficient PVC alternatives? Well, we think so.

Timber-Resin Composite Finials
Finials, traditionally, are all about decoration, the top-piece finishing off a piece. Our finials give our timber lanterns that bespoke, timeless elegance that they’re known for. We also found, however, when we first designed our roof lanterns, that making our finials only out of timber led to them cracking further down the line. This splitting can lead to leakages and drips, something that nobody wants. That’s why we use a special timber-resin composite, resistant to such splitting.

Safe As Houses
Finally, we come to the glazing itself – the element that makes roof lanterns such sought after possessions. Most people want to know that their homes are safe. A home, after all, is someone’s fortress. With our toughened glazing (and the addition of an extra laminated pane possible) security is something you’ll no longer need worry about. Nobody is going to be breaking through your roof lantern anytime soon, that’s for sure. This glazing also has the added benefit of fantastic sound insulation, meaning that if you live somewhere noisy, a more urban area perhaps, you can drown out anything extraneous to what’s going on inside your home.

So, there you have it! There’s a gritty side to our timber lanterns that lies beneath their stylish looks. When you purchase one, you can be sure that it will take on the elements, and win comprehensively. Style is no substitute for substance, and our bespoke lanterns will stand the test of time for years to come.
