Roof lantern for new open plan extension

This beautiful home in Milton Keynes needed some major updates to the layout in order to make it work for a growing family. The disjointed downstairs layout of many different rooms meant that members of the family found themselves alone in different rooms at different times, either cooking working or doing their homework.

The homeowners John and Susan wanted a house with one large open plan space where the family could all carry out their various activities but not be separated by walls. John thought that perhaps it was time to consider moving to a new house, whilst Susan loved the property and felt that it had the potential to become a beautiful, yet practical space.

With the husband and wife having differing opinions on what their next step should be, they enlisted the help of Channel 4’s property loving duo Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer. The couple took part in the popular Channel 4 TV show ‘Love It or List’ to help them decide if they should stay in their much-loved home or sell up and move on.

The property has a lot of history and a lot of character, with some beautiful period features, but the flow was all wrong.  In order to try and make the home more practical for modern living, the homeowners decided to open the whole ground floor layout at the back of the house and add an extension with a timber roof lantern.

As the property was South facing, it would benefit from a lot of natural light so in order to maximise this natural light an Aliwood Roof Lantern was installed.

John says: “‘Because the extension featured a flat pitch roof, we had the opportunity to fit a roof lantern and decided that it was the best option for us. We thought it would be easy to obtain some quotes, but I ended up spending a lot of time looking for the right kind of roof light. I didn’t want a standard uPVC roof lantern, as it wouldn’t suit the character of the house, but I still wanted something that would be tough and durable so opted for a timber roof lantern.’

An Aliwood roof lantern is internally crafted from a durable and high-quality redwood timber and external is coated with aluminium, meaning that no timber elements were exposed to the elements. This style of roof lantern was the perfect choice for this property as it was a combination of modern technology and traditional style.

The new roof lantern makes such a stunning visual impact in the dining room and this coupled with the floods of natural light that now enter the space, the family feel this was an extremely worthy investment.

Thrilled with the renovation results to their property and much to the delight of Susan (with the thorough backing of John) the family have decided to ‘Love It’ and not ‘List it’!
