A roof lantern is a glazed structure fitted into a flat roof for the purpose of providing natural light and enhancing the space of a room. Typically, roof lanterns complement areas in need of more light to improve the room.
Our roof lanterns are made with quality and functionality in mind, combining laminated timber and powder-coated aluminium capping for a balanced structure with long-term weather resistance.
We offer timber roof lanterns in three shapes and various sizes depending on your property’s existing structure, with prices starting from £1,250. These will work best with flat roof extensions for open-plan living spaces, including kitchens and dining rooms, where natural light makes all the difference.

Roof Lantern Shapes and Sizes
Square Roof Lanterns
These often sit central in the middle of the ceiling, and are well-suited for square rooms and symmetrical extensions. Square roof lanterns provide natural light into a specific space below, illuminating a focused area of your choosing.
Rectangular Roof Lanterns
This shape requires correct proportions and positioning for the optimal amount of balance and light. Rectangular roof lanterns work best in longer extensions and open-plan areas, transforming a room into a bright, expansive space.
Octagonal Roof Lanterns
With circular, polygonal, or turreted rooms, this style of roof lantern is ideal. An octagonal roof lantern provides a distinct architectural feature that enhances light distribution and creates a sense of elegance within a space.

Roof Lantern Materials
Timber
We use premium-grade, knot-free laminated Redwood timber for the internal frames of the roof lanterns. Our timber is sourced from FSC®-certified forests, and is a low-carbon alternative to tropical hardwoods and PVC. This timber provides thermal qualities that retain warmth during the colder months, and keep a room temperature well-regulated all year round.
Aluminium
Our roof lanterns are fully capped with powder-coated aluminium, providing protection and durability against the elements. Aluminium as a material does not rot, warp, or degrade when exposed to harsh weather conditions, and it protects the timber to prevent water ingress.
Finial
The capping piece at the top of the roof lantern is called a finial, which is a decorative piece of the structure available in a ball or cap-style. These are made from a timber-resin composite that lasts for decades, eliminating the risk of water ingress at the peak.
Glazing
Standard Glazing
Our standard specification is a 4/16/4mm toughened glass unit with a Soft Low-E coating. This is an argon gas-filled cavity with a warm-edge spacer bar, elevating the thermal performance of the roof lantern overall.
Security Glazing
For optimum security and sound insulation, we also offer security glazing. This Standard toughened glass is upgraded to include a 4/14/6.4mm laminated pane, reducing UV transmission which limits the colour fading of floor, curtains, and furniture.
Solar Control Glazing
For reduced solar glare and heat buildup, we offer Sun Guard solar reflective coating panes. This is the most popular option in our roof lantern selection, and it is highly recommended for larger installations and south-facing properties.
Ventilation Options
While fixed roof lanterns provide natural light and enhance a room’s spaciousness, it is recommended to have some form of ventilation, especially if the roof lantern is placed above a kitchen. Practical airflow is key to improving the air quality inside your home and preventing a buildup of moisture.
Most Aliwood roof lanterns can be built with an opening vent, which is operated electronically via a simple rocker switch or control panel for ease. We offer a single or double vent, depending on your preferences and the size of the room lantern.
Specification and Finish
Our roof lanterns are available in six internal colours and two external colours, with alternative RAL colours at an additional cost.
We spray-apply two coats of Teknos paint at 120 microns to the inside of the roof lantern, which is approximately four times thicker than a brush-painted finish.
Teknos paint systems are water-based and microporous, which leaves a durable and protective plastic layer. This provides further protection from internal moisture and bacterial growth, and only requires occasional washing during the year.

Installation
If you just need a fully finished roof lantern, we provide a Supply Only service, where we deliver the product on-site in component parts. You can then assemble the roof lantern yourself or with a builder using our instruction manual and installation video.
We also offer a Supply and Install service, which starts at £800 depending on your location. We will support you with building regulations, upstand and kerb set-up to ensure a smooth process.
